Its 16,000 square metres will bring together two great cultural proposals that will turn Betoño into a highly attractive cultural axis for Vitoria-Gasteiz. Very close to the city centre, there are very outstanding projects in this area, namely, the Vital building, the Ciudad de Baskonia, the Ataria Centre for the Observation of Nature or the Shopping mall El Boulevard.
The old cemetery is going to become the headquarters of the Sancho el Sabio Foundation, the main document bank of Basque culture in the Basque Country, which will also belong to the Caja Vital Kutxa Permanent Fund. It will be covered in glass and steel, and it will be provided with a basement where the documents will be kept.
The old convent will be KREA Expresión Contemporánea building. The architectural solution put forward is based upon the balance between the old convent and a new corridor-like building that winds through the old building and towers upon it, entering the cloister. This new building has been considered an icon of contemporary architecture in Alava, a powerful, yet, simple and familiar formal image.
