Introduction

From 21 October 2008 to 27 November 2008

KREA is arranging three photography workshops led by eminent professionals as part of Periscope, an event that turns the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz into the capital of photojournalism.

- ‘Tools to teach yourself photography’. Workshop leader: Peter van Agtmael.  21st, 22nd and 23rd October.
The importance of light and the use of emotions to guide compositions. A look at photographic history and how images become historic. It will also examine ways of financing photojournalism in times of uncertainty and good business practices.

Peter van Agtmael (USA, 1981) has won various accolades such the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass 2008, Critical Mass Book 2008 and second prize at the World Press Photo 2007. He has covered issues such as the tsunami in Thailand, healthcare in South Africa and the US wars, and works with The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, CNN and Liberation, among others.

- 'Contemporary photography in journalism. Compatibility between art and information'. Workshop leader: Mónica Allende. 4th, 5th and 6th November.
How would you define your photography? What is your preferred medium to show your photography? These are two of the questions Mónica Allende will be asking participants in the workshop. Depending on the answers given, Mónica Allende will examine the compatibility between artistic photography and editorial work, stressing the changes that have occurred in photojournalism and the profile sought after in today’s photographers. She will also analyse the individual portfolios of each participant to exchange views about their aspirations and ideas, and will provide advice and information about how to present them to graphic editors, which festivals to attend and which competitions to enter.

Mónica Allende has been the graphic editor of the Sunday Times Magazine since 2002. Previously, she worked as an editor at Pearson and APA, among others. Her work has won awards on many occasions: Graphic Editors Award for the Best Magazine of 2006, Amnesty International Award in the category of photojournalism, Best Use of Photography at the Graphic Design Awards. She has been a judge for many international photography competitions and is currently preparing a book and an exhibition about Darfur.

- ‘Shooting, editing and digital processing’. Workshop leaders: David López Espada and Luis de las Alas. 25th, 26th and 27th November.
The practical workshop looks at all the stages of an outdoor portrait project: lighting, viewing, editing, raw processing, final copy and printing. All the attendees should take a digital camera with them.

David López Espada (Madrid, 1969) has been working with Isabel Muñoz for the past 16 years.
